I started the draft of a novel in October and finished it in April. Since then, I have been slowly making progress through the first round of edits.
Despite the accomplishment of finishing the first draft, I was very inconsistent.
There were months where a wrote more than a thousand words a day. There were months where I didn’t write a word.
This goes against just about every piece of advice I’ve gotten about writing.
Some people say you have to write the same amount every day. Some people say you have to write for the same amount of time every day. People will try to sell you software, and candles, and special computers.
None of this advice is necessarily wrong, but that doesn’t make it right for you.
In many ways, I wish I had done more. If I had written every day, maybe I could be on my way to a book deal. But I also know that if I had forced myself to write every day, I might never have finished.
So if you look back on this year and are disappointed in what you’ve accomplished, remember that no matter how long it takes, if you don’t stop, it gets done.
I have so much to go before I’m ready to try and get my baby out into the world. Some of the worst writing I’ve ever done is in this project. But then again, it has some of the best. And for that, I am proud of what I’ve accomplished in 2024.
I know it will get done. Maybe not by the end of this new year. But it will get done.
