As I was going through my bookshelf to make an Instagram post about my last blog entry, I realized I also read poetry and non-fiction. So here are some other books to read this month and the whole year round!
All Along you Were Blooming | Morgan Harper Nichols
Poetry | Affirmations | Art | Uplifting
This book is STUNNING. Her illustrations are gorgeous, and her words are uplifting. If you need something pretty and encouraging on your coffee table, pick up this book.
Wild Hundreds | Nate Marshall
Poetry | Free-Verse | Storytelling
Step into Nate Marshall’s world growing up in Chicago with his rich verses and energetic imagery. This book contains anger, and joy, and passion.
Witch Wife | Kiki Petrosino
Poetry | History | Dark | Rich
Petrosino plays with modern and historic forms of poetry in this collection. This book feels haunted as she explores life in the south.
For Everyone | Jason Reynolds
Poetry | For All Ages | Uplifting
“This is for the courageous, and everyone who wants to be.” This book is an open letter of encouragement to be who are, and pursue your dreams. This will inspire young kids and adults alike.
The New Jim Crow | Michelle Alexander
Non-Fiction | Mass Incarceration | Systemic Racism
If you want to understand mass incarceration and how it is deeply tied to the brutal history of racism in America, this might be the best place to begin. Alexander goes into how the current prison system is (as the title says) how the government adapted abolished Jim Crow laws.
God’s Law and Order | Aaron Griffith
Non-Fiction | Mass Incarceration | Evangelical Critique
Side Note: The author is white, but the book contains a valuable look into how evangelicalism plays a role in mass incarceration.
If you want to learn more about mass incarceration and want to know how American Evangelicalism has shaped America’s prisons, give this book a read.
Remember to prioritize reading Black joy as well as learning about the history of racism. So read Black fiction, poetry, and non-fiction. Read what you can. Do what you can.
