As the new year comes to an end, I want to share some of my favorite books. I get most of my book recommendations through the internet, so I thought I would contribute to the noise of people telling you what to read.
If you don’t like fantasy or gay people, you might not want to read any of these.
This is How You Loose the Time War | Amal El-Mohtar and Max Gladstone
Fantasy | literary | sapphic | a wild wild ride
This book changed my brain. If you don’t like reading experimental stuff, don’t read this. But if you are okay with being confused, then you have to read this. If you want to wade through the love story of two women through time and space, then this is the book for you.
The Spear Cuts Through Water | Simon Jimenez
Fantasy | literary | complex | profound
This is another boundary-pushing book, so it definitely takes some brain power to read. But it is so unbelievably beautiful in the way it weaves multiple stories together. If you want to feel everything and still not really know what’s going on, then you should get fifty copies of this book.
Ocean’s Godori | Elaine U Cho
Science Fiction | adventurous | gritty | gripping
This book kept me turning the pages with its incredible world and unique characters. I know that’s so generic, but it’s true. As well as a mystery set in a grand space opera, this book has amazing chemistry between multiple romance subplots. If you want a completely thought-out galaxy like Star Trek but with an edge, read this book today.
Becky Chambers (all of it)
Science Fiction | space friends | cozy | heart-warming
All of Becky Chambers’ books are an absolute delight to read. As well as being fun and engaging, every book makes me appreciate something about the human experience. If you want a space opera to sink your teeth into, then the Wayfarer series is the series for you. If you want a meditative journey through the eyes of a charming robot, The Monk and the Robot series is the series for you.
The Emperor and the Endless Palace | Justinian Huang
Fantasy | spicy | evocative | gripping
If you don’t want to read about dicks, don’t read this. But if you do, then this book is everything. The sex scenes contribute to the power of this weaving tale about a relationship throughout time. But it isn’t really a romance novel. If you want to read some purposeful smut that makes you think about what healthy romance is, pick up this book.
Masters of Death | Olivia Blake
Fantasy | literary | sarcastic | profound
The writing style in this book made me jealous in the best way. She is so witty that every sentence has a clever or devastating punch line. This novel is so packed full of characters, and I love every single one of them. If you want to read a grand story with romance subplots, this is the book for you.
Project Hail Mary | Andy Weir
Science Fiction | space friends | puzzle | science
This is my favorite pure science fiction book. Most of the sci-fi I read is mixed up with fantasy. But this was pure sci-fi delight. This book has one of my favorite little creatures in it, and the puzzle is a fun one to try to keep up with. If you like cleverly made-up science, then you should give this book a read.
(P.S. this is the only one that doesn’t have at least a dash of gayness)
Books I’m looking forward to:
- To Shape A Dragon’s Breath Sequel
- Iron Widow Sequel
- Ocean Godori Sequel
- Justinian Huang’s second book
- All the gay fantasies to come!
